5240 Song #52: Zeroed Out

5240 Song #52 (for January 4, 2010):

Zeroed Out

Here it is, the last one. Got it in just under the wire: song #1 - January 5, 2009. Song #52 - January 4, 2010. 52 songs in 365 days.

I did it. I'm free.

Thanks so much to everyone who paid attention this year. Thanks to all the guests who made appearances on songs (I wish I could have used you more). HUGE thanks to Darin Di Pietro for mastering all of the tunes, and making the best of what meager recordings I could scrape together. I'm exhausted, and a little numb right now. I'll have some wrap-up posts on the blog here in a couple of days, and probably a little sign-off video, too (look for that next weekend).

Thank you. Thank you. I'm gonna go sleep for a... while.

Incredible feat, sir. The quantity of what you did is impressive as can be but it's the quality that boggles. Nicely done.

Tough to put this all into words. I actually feel kind of weird that "it's over", in a way that I wasn't expecting. 'Course, the sound of Zeroed Out has helped to facilitate this feeling, as it should I suppose. But still... this is odd for me. I may even go so far as to say, "I done been moved".

Again, 5240 is one of my most favorites pieces of art I've ever experienced. Sure, there are lots of individual works in there that are deserved of individual attention. But it's REALLY easy, effortless actually, to think of all 52 together, 52 pieces of one entity. It's like being in an art museum and looking at a giant wall mural... getting up close and inspecting little details, eyes meandering and walking from one end to the other, then stepping back and checking out the whole picture in full. Either way, it's really impressive.

Anyway... way to go Shawn. Zeroed Out is great and weird and is well-suited for the role of last track. Congratulations!

Thank you thank you thank you for letting us experience this wonderful, unique work of art. I just realised: The Beatles (three great song writers) made about 150 songs in 8 years; you surpassed them with this achievement. Incredible.

Now for this last song: I had to listen to it twice to get a first glimpse of it. I love the "You can go now boy"-part and the strange solo in the end. It's not about the individual notes, but the serpent it makes is very effective and surreal.

I need to listen to it a lot more. I need to listen to all of this project a lot more.

Once more: thank you thank you thank you!!!

More specifically to this track Shawn, as we all gush a little bit about the end of it all, this tune is really great... one of the best in my opinion. It seems to capture so much of what I've come to know as "you" or your style. It's dramatic and seems to cradle a lot of emotion, appropriately so. But that could just be me. :)

Thanks so much, everybody! It was one crazy year, wasn't it? I'm gonna miss the weekly "conversations" with you die-hards. Boo. :(

But, I've already got the ideas swirling around in the noggin for the next projects. There'll be some more HZ, and other stuff that is still taking shape.

Love the song. Amazing finish to quite an aural adventure. Thanks for putting yourself out there, not just for your own catharsis, but for the rest of us who enjoyed the ride.

So umm... see you next week?

It was definitely a fun ride and congratulations for pulling it off. The final song is really about as good as I could have imagined for the last one. The mood of it fits nicely.

Well done throughout...thanks for the music!

Vol IV will be up as soon as I get the DDP-approved master of "Zeroed Out". The one that's up currently is my quick-n'-dirty version.

And Kevin Kennedy - bite your tongue, sir! ;-)

What an amazing closer. We're not just saying it, it really is. Huge congrats!

I'm so grateful to have experienced this project. Thank you for hanging in there and being a wicked source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing such good stuff with us. Now that it's done I realise how much of an impression this thing has made on me.

"You can choose to leave that weight behind ... dance and sing" Yeah man! Freedom rocks.

go redheads ;)

Congratulations! I've been lurking from start to finish, and following this has been a real treat. So many interesting ideas, executed so well. The closer feels right, just amazingly right.

Seeing this accomplishment happen in real time, especially given what seemed like a tough year for you, is just a huge motivator to go try to do something that seems out of reach. I suspect I'm not the only one who finds 5240 inspiring.

Looking forward to the CDs, if you have any energy left...

Has anyone noticed that with this song, Shawn has included in 5240 at least song for each letter of the alphabet? Even Q, X, and Z.
