If someone wanted to get me something great for Christmas, they'd go and bid on this auction, being put on by Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger. And then when the auction is won, this someone would make them write a story about 5240.
Auction proceeds go to a worthy Seattle charity, too. What's not to love?

Shawn, as penance for being a lurker, I just put in an esnipe for an undisclosed amount. I've been listening to your stuff all year, and am liking a lot of it. Anybody else interested in bidding, email me and we can pool our resources.
Aw, I see no reason for "penance" for lurking. Sure, I like hearing thoughts/opinions, but I got no problem with those that prefer to just listen to the shenanigans. On the other hand, I would've known about your blog sooner if you had commented previously. ;-P
BOOM! I'm in... and winning. And I would definitely be up for pooling our funds to make this happen. That would very cool indeed.
If you want, I'd be happy to volunteer my own PayPal account as a place for everyone to drop their contribution. Then, when we think we've collected all we can, we can place "our" bid and see what happens. I'm very trustworthy, Shawn can vouch for that. I just want to help make it easier for people to participate even if they can only bid 2 bucks or something. Together, we'll have a better chance.
Now, of course, there's a chance we will lose the auction or we won't even be able raise enough to make a bid. But I will still have everyone's money. Thinking ahead, it would be difficult (and costly) to try and return everyone's money. So here's my suggestion. Instead, let's just donate whatever we raise (and lose) to charity... say, a charity for music and kids or something like that. If we go that way, then I would suggest that you "bid"/contribute to the auction fund whatever amount you're willing to lose... even though what you lose on the auction will be a "win" for some charity out there.
Follow me?
FYI, I submitted an "I ain't playin'" kind of bid (and perfectly prepared to pay for it myself if need be, so no worries there).
This should be fun to watch for 8+ more days.

word: Felundo!
Plus, going with my suggestion might help prevent us from outbidding each other for no real overall gain (which is probably what I did to yearsagotoday... sorry).

Shawn,
As a new blogger, I've found that I value comments more than anything else. It's great to see download numbers, but it's better to read comments. So now I'm trying to comment on the music I like more. Do unto others, etc. etc.
Mike,
I always use esnipe to bid on ebay auctions - it places the bid for me at the last second so I don't get caught up in a bidding war. So my bid isn't in there yet. My bid is slightly higher than the high bid now, but that won't last. I'm fine with the charity idea if the auction falls through. Do you know of one that fits the bill? Your profile is hidden btw, so I can't find your email addy.
yearsagotoday,
I'm profile-less... out of laziness primarily and the lack of interest in yet ANOTHER profile. :)
I need to do a bit of research on the charity idea. But I know there's something out there. That being said, we should welcome suggestions for charitable alternatives... then maybe Shawn could pick one. Or we can just worry about that next week when we'll know for sure if we've won or lost.

p.s. My email address is my first name, as it's written here, followed by a -dot-, then my last name, which is how I sign my posts here, AT, a popular free web-based email service that starts with 'gm'. :P
Jeez, you guys are awesome. That's all.
I'm up for pooling funds as well. Mike, I'll email you for the paypal details.
As for charities, I'd vote for a food bank or a music related program (ie School Of Rock), since that's kind of fitting.
OK, so... my "I ain't playing'" bid has bid OUTbid. So, pooling our money is definitely what we'll need to do.
For anyone that's interested, please email me so we can work out the details. My email address has been cryptically posted earlier in this thread. But if you have trouble, let me know here and I'll try to be a bit less paranoid about posting it. :P
I wish we had some kind of idea of what it will take to win. The auction ends on "Dec 11, 200917:00:27 PST". So, should we say, collect money until some point on the 10th, then just throw up our overall bid and let it play out? And if anyone else comes along that wants to contribute, then we can just increase our maximum bid. Or I can just keep bidding as money comes in. I don't really think it's going to matter much. We'll either get it or we won't.
I like the School of Rock idea... does seem most fitting. I know for sure that I wouldn't be the person I am today or have the great friends that I do, without music programs in school.

word: knobing (what?)
So it closed for $237.50. What did we bid?
Hi,
Well, it looks like I screwed it all up... though we didn't collect enough money to win any way. I'll be sending everyone their money back.
I could swear that the auction was scheduled to end at some point tomorrow. I had plans for today (which happen to fall through due to illness) and I remember thinking, "good, it ends on Sunday, si I don't have to worry about missing the end while I'm out of town". Maybe I just read it wrong or looked at the wrong month on the calendar. Who knows.
The fact that it's over is a surprise to me. But I kind of full stupid after trying to organize this thing. But something is just odd about it because I didn't even get the usual "auction is going to end soon" email that I've always received from eBay when I'm either watching or bidding on an auction.
Sorry guys. Like I said, we didn't have enough in the fund anyway, but I would have liked to have bid at the very least.
-Witty
Wow! If I had known that the auction would go that high, I never woulda said nuthin' about it. I mean, yay charity! But wow... that's not a small chunk of change.
I appreciate that some of you tried to put a bid together, though - thanks a bunch.
Witty,
Don't sweat it. If we didn't have enough, doesn't make a difference. What about school of rock?
