5240 Song #1: Help Is On The Way

5240 Song #1 (for January 5, 2009):

Help Is On The Way

This one was co-written by Half Zaftig, featuring Lizzy Daymont on bass and vocals, and Pete Johnston on drums and vocals (I'm on guitar and lead vox, silly).

Thank you for listening! PLEASE consider posting a comment by clicking the comments link below! Thank you, and I'll see you next week!

UPDATED! Now with silly video:

UPDATED AGAIN: Thanks for all the questions/comments in the uh, comments! I WILL get around to answering them, and I'm thinking of doing so in another video to post with next week's song. Folks seem to really enjoy me making an arse of myself on video, so, hey - I'm all for doing more, plus I can't help but get better at Final Cut. Answers are forthcoming, keep the questions rolling! Thank you!

Wow... such quality for the first go'round. Not that I was expecting any less. 'Course, I guess you had a bit longer than a week to work on this one.

Curious, and perhaps you've mentioned this in previous posts.... but, in your plan, are you "allowed" to work on a song for longer than one week? Can you work on multiple songs at a time and just release them whenever they're "ready"? Or is each week a new/fresh week, clean slate every week?

Is the "skipping" effect the result of an odd time signature or just a manipulation of a standard t.s. like 4/4? It reminds me (brings back the memory of) the "skipping" effect that y'all did in the FunHouse version of "Can't Get There from Here" by R.E.M. Very cool Shawn... this is going to be fun (for me).

I don't know how you do it, I get writers block then a mass of song ideas come to me, not sure I could come up with a song every week, as well as record everything for it. Cheers to you.

So are you just gonna look back at the 52 songs this time next year and just reproduce them and keep the best so many for the followup album?

Well, I for one dig it. I've really been looking forward to this thing starting. The first song is fantastic... and I dig your video. Can't wait until next week.

I love it! I especially like the harmonies on the "o-way-o" vocal bridge. I am so excited for this - what a great project!

Lets Just say I think your awfully ambitious. Dale, Little Tim and I all thought your video was BRILLIANT. I liked your song. Actually, it left me yearning for more. I thought it was too short. I could definitely see a "full" song coming from this.

...and does he approach the lake cautiously, dipping one toe in the water to test the temperature before easing in? mm-MMMM! Yogi don't mess aROUND! He hits the lake running at a full-sprint and does a jack-knife into the deep end, dousing everybody watching poolside.

Nice job tossing in all the crazy 7's & stop time-wackiness. Impressive debut! Can't wait 'til next week. Looking forward to being blown away again. (No pressure.)

You're actually DOING it, my man. You're on your way to becoming my new hero.

Congrats on your first song! B and I loved it. He thought it was Foo Fighters crossed with XTC. The crazy timing still gets me; it's very different and I like it a great deal. Petey and Lucy are also rooting you on. If you ever need any dachshund inspiration, I'll run them right down to Belltown for you. They can be quite the muses.

Similar questions have been asked, but do you think you'll love 'em and leave 'em or maybe go back and flesh out a few (or more) into lengthier, more detailed songs? HIOTW, to me, sounds like the chorus or bridge of a much longer song and I know I'm trying to imagine verses around it. Are you, too?

I personally have had the tremendous pleasure of listening to entire the Half Zaftig cd Life Like Luster and it does not disappoint. Always a unique sound and there are plenty of rockin' surprises.

You know the really 'hard' stuff is my favorite but this one has cool arrangements. And I think I've watched your intro video 5 times. Still ROTFLMAO!

Proud of you and can't wait to hear the rest!!!

Woo hoo!
You are like the Jack Bauer
of Indie Rock. Viva la fitty two!

Off to a hot start - I wanna listen to this song whippin' down the highway...how do I download it?

I played HIOTW for some of the folks here in the office and they seemed to dig it. But the real pleasure was later in the afternoon, hearing a co-worker walking down the hall past my office SINGING, "help is on the way, help is on the way". Sure, certainly repetition within the song was partly to blame, but that phrase alone was born to stick.

I double Bryan's statement. But, that's what we all love about you man! "Help is on the Way" is great. Gaito said "I especially like the harmonies on the "o-way-o" vocal bridge." I agree. Have you ever heard Heavy Vegetable? I'm sure MK knows what I'm talking about. Keep it up man!

Awesome. I can't imagine taking on a task of this scope, but I hope you pull it off. If the first track is any indication, we're in for some good times!

Excellent! I think it's short, sweet and exactly the right length. Great riff and playing by the band. Did I mention it being excellent imo?
